The difference between a DIY manicure and a salon one usually isn’t the polish. It’s the tools and the prep. Here’s the kit.

A salon manicure is mostly shaping and cuticle work, done carefully. With the right tools, you can do the same at home in 20 minutes, for the cost of one salon visit.
The kit
| Tool | Why you need it |
|---|---|
| Sharp nail clippers | Clean cuts without splitting |
| Glass nail file | Smooth, sealed edges |
| Cuticle pusher | Neat nail beds |
| Cuticle nipper | Hangnails only |
| 4-way buffer | Smooth surface, natural shine |
| Cuticle oil | Healthy, flexible nails |
| Manicure set (optional) | Everything in one case |
1. Sharp Nail Clippers
Best for: clean cuts that don’t crack the nail
Dull clippers crush the nail and cause splits. Seki Edge and Tweezerman are long-time Amazon favorites.

2. Glass Nail File
Best for: shaping without peeling
Glass seals the edge instead of shredding it. File in one direction only.

3. Cuticle Pusher
Best for: clean nail beds that make polish look professional
Gently push back softened cuticles after a shower or a warm soak. Never force it.

4. Cuticle Nipper
Best for: hangnails and loose skin only
Trim only the dead, lifted bits. Cutting living cuticle can lead to infection.

5. 4-Way Nail Buffer
Best for: a smooth, shiny natural nail
Buff gently, a few times a month at most. Over-buffing thins nails.

6. Cuticle Oil

FAQ
Should I cut my cuticles?
Generally no. Push them back and trim only loose, dead skin and hangnails.
What nail shape is strongest?
Squoval (square with soft corners) and round shapes resist breaking better than sharp square or stiletto.
How often should I do a full manicure?
Every 1–2 weeks, with cuticle oil daily in between.
